COVID-19 and Schools

Updated: Oct 9, 2020

(Hi everyone! Mikayla here. Lots continues to change as the school year progresses. I spent half a day on Sep 21 poring over the Health Unit website to update our own, only to find out yesterday that guidelines were updated on Sep 24 and now even Oct 1! Please rely on the information provided by our local Health Unit and please respect the boundaries placed by individual schools, companies and organizations. All of this change is to help reduce transmission of ANY viral infections but also balance and reduce disruption in our regular daily life.)

As with the pattern of 2020, guidelines are ever-changing with limited notice. As usual, please visit our COVID-19 page. Below is what we have compiled specifically for back-to-school procedures updated as of today, October 2, 2020.

Please use the COVID-19 School Screening Form daily.

My child is showing symptoms of illness

Schools have been sending home children who are sick with ANY symptom.

If your child has a new or worsening symptom, do not send them to school.

If your child has a "regular" symptom from a known diagnosis or chronic health condition, likely the school will ask for a doctor's note to accompany them. Please contact us to book an appointment.

My child is stuck at home

Keep them home for at least 24 hours, and try to limit contact with others (self-isolate as much as physically possible so they don't pass on their symptoms to anyone, even siblings).

Case 1: If your child has ANY of the following, they should get a COVID-19 test:

  • Fever/chills

  • Cough or barking cough

  • Shortness of breath

  • Decreased/loss of smell or taste

Case 2: If your child has TWO OR MORE of the following, they should get a COVID-19 test:

  • Sore throat

  • Stuffy/runny nose

  • Headache

  • Nausea/vomiting/diarrhea/digestive issues

  • Fatigue/lethargy/malaise

  • Muscle aches

  • Pink eye

Case 3: If your child has only ONE of the above, keep them home for 24 hours.

  • If they feel better the next day and symptoms are improving, they can return to school/child care when well enough to do so and no COVID-19 testing is needed. (WVM: we recommend students stay home until they are symptom-free, so they do not pass on their symptoms to others and now they have to stay home too).

  • If they feel worse the next day, they should get a COVID-19 test.

My child is now symptom free

If your child is awaiting a COVID-19 result, please keep them self-isolated.

If POSITIVE, please follow the procedures given by the Health Unit.

If NEGATIVE, your child must not have a fever (no using medication) AND has been improving for 24 hours (WVM: or symptom free for 24 hours) before bringing your child back to school.

If your child did not get a COVID-19 result and fits Case 1 or 2 above, please wait out the 14 days before bringing your child back to school.

If your child did not get a COVID-19 result and fits Case 3 above, your child must not have a fever (no using medication) AND has been improving for 24 hours (or symptom free for 24 hours) before bringing your child back to school.
